gerald stoner, sculptor
gerald stoner, whisical and immensely talented steel sculptor, is BAM VT’s next featured artist. he has been living in vermont for about 20 years in the beautiful town of underhill, where he now lives with his wife and two young sons.
gerald was born in kokomo, indiana but grew up in upstate new york. he received his B.A. in sculpture and photography from the state university of new york at plattsburgh and went on to earn his M.F.A. in sculpture at northern illinois university. soon after completion of his mfa, vermont was blessed with his arrival.
here are a couple of his sculptures to keep you reading and searching for ways to find gerald:
currently gerald teaches sculpture, photography, and visual arts at bellows free academy in st. albans, vt. he is also an instructor at community college of vermont in st. albans and burlington, teaching ceramics, sculpture, and photography. his work is displayed each year at the open studio tour memorial day weekend each may and can be found at other local places in burlington and surrounding towns. check the links below for his web site and facebook page links for more details.
gerald’s sculpture and photography has been on display throughout new england, as well as group exhibitions in new york, texas, illinois, and colorado. he has accumulated a number of awards from these exhibitions (surprised?).
in gerald’s own words:
“the process of working with steel is natural for me, descending from many generations that worked in the steel mills of the midwest. the dexterity of steel remains a constant exploration in my work, celebrating the material. the permanence and the ability of steel to be whimsical, brutal, and atmospheric are embraced in my sculpture. the work is constructed from steel yard finds. all sculptures are meant to be exhibited on their own, but i have found that displaying them as a group creates an atmosphere of personalities.”
here are a couple that bam vt thinks would have terrific chemistry:
these sculptures would be a blessing on anyone’s property. gerald will work with you to create the perfect sculpture for you. he makes sculpture large and small. check out his facebook page for installations he has done to get an idea of scale (link to follow).
